DAY 03

pursue the Truth

It was a face-to-face, underneath the stars, that changed everything for a man named Nichodemas, but we will call him Nick. Nick was a spiritual leader of Jesus’ day and through the company he kept, was not supposed to be anywhere near Jesus. The problem was that Nick was in desperate search for truth and he believed that Jesus had the answers.

Nick heard of all the miracles Jesus had done and all of the people that were being taught and impacted by His ministry. So, he wanted to examine Jesus for himself, in order to separate fact from fiction. Let’s listen in on their conversation.

John 3:1-21
3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Wow! What a loaded conversation. It is interesting that Nick came to Jesus personally when he could have sent one of his personal assistants, since that was the normal, cultural thing to do. But, desperation will always cause you to break social protocols. A Pharisee! A Teacher of the Law of God! Coming to this Jesus who he deemed GREATER than his knowledge and reputation. Now, understand that meeting with Jesus was a career risk because to his peers this Jesus was irrelevant to their truth. But their truth about God had left Nick empty for more. The fact is, when you are desperate enough to give up your reputation and cast down your position you WILL meet JESUS.

You have to figure out where you are in your relationship with God. Who is He to you? Is eHworth giving up your reputation? (You know the one you worked so hard to build). Or, to you maybe He’s not worth the risk, maybe you have heard about Jesus and all the miracles H=e has done and you want to separate fact from fiction. So you are seeking out the truth. Here is the kicker: Jesus is the truth and He wants to be found by you!

Back to the story.

Nick came to Jesus with some very kinds words. He asked no questions, he just offered kind words, words that were not insulting but filled with respect. Jesus excitingly responds as if He ignored what Nick just said. Jesus was being rude but I believe that Jesus was “in the moment.” Jesus was completely focused on Nicks quest for truth and He knew that wanted a purpose and destiny to live for. Everything he was doing in his life, everything he worked for he hoped he was doing with an eternal purpose. This was his moment… and Jesus knew it. Just like this is your moment… and Jesus knows it.

In order for you to live your life with a purpose that really matters eternally; a destiny that impacts; a life of real joy; a life free from sin’s grip; assurance of your entrance into heaven, let these ancient words of Jesus echo in your heart as they did in Nicks heart that night.

Heavy words. Yeah, I know. You might be thinking like Nick did, “How can someone be born again?” Allow me to help you. Romans 10:9 says, “Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Saved=Born Again

Are you desperate enough to make this reality in your life? Find a piece of paper and a pen and take a moment to write down what you are thinking right now.

Salvation is more than saying a prayer. Salvation believes. Are you desperate enough to pray this prayer and believe it?

When you are ready… pray and believe this prayer.

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask you for forgiveness. You know all the sin in my life and I repent. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn away from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
